What is Science Fiction?

In literature, it is very hard to apply an exact definition to the term science fiction. Some works of fiction are based in solid science. Many works take the science fact and theory of today and extend them to possible or probable future uses. Yet other works rely on technologies that are not possible without some type of new breakthrough or discovery, such as space drives that use hyper or jump space, or the development of time travel.
