Admiral Yi Sun-sin (April 28, 1545 - Dec. 16, 1598)-
Yi Sun-sin was a Korean Admiral and Korean National Hero. His actions during the Japanese invasions of Korea in the 1590s are considered to be instrumental in repelling the invaders.
During his Naval career he was undefeated even though he had no training or experience in naval operations.
Intrigue and jealousy on the part of other Military Officers resulted in false allegations that cuased Yi to be arrested, tortured, and demoted to common soldier twice. During his second arrest and demotion another Admiral ( Won Gyun ) was placed in command of the Joseon navies. Through inept command and a failure to heed reports from scouts Won Gyun led the Joseon fleet into a Japanese ambush where it was almost completely decimated. Only thirteen Joseon ships survived the battle.
Yi Sun-sin was rapidly re-instated as the commander of the Joseon Navy. With only the thirteen surviving ships, Yi managed to defeat a Japanese fleet that numbered in the hundreds, preventing the Japanese land forces from being reinforced and re-supplied.
Yi managed to build the Joseon Navy back up to 85 war ships, three of which were "Turtle Ships" before his final battle and death from a stray musket ball.

Yi Sun-sin is often credited with inventing the "Turtle Ships" (possibly the first "iron-clad" ships), but in reality he improved on a previous design, and was instrumental in their construction and deployment.
